The village developed as a residential area for shipowners and sailors of the Kitamae-bune merchant vessels. The traditional houses, together with the gardens, storehouses, shrines and temple buildings, stone structures, and even trees on the site, retain the historical atmosphere of the area. In 2009, it was designated as a National Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings.
